How long-lasting is our collective memory?

Recently I watched this documentary which teleported me back to 2018. I have relived a memory of me standing on the square in Martin and later in Bratislava with hundreds of other people who were disgusted about how corrupted our system was and how someone can just order to kill a journalist who is in a way. There were consequences and the system was cleaned of some corrupt people like Robert Kaliňák, Robert Fico’s cabinet was dissolved, and Peter Pellegrini was appointed as a new leader. Events following were crucial for a healthier government without corruption, things were looking up for Slovakia. Though there were also many crises like covid pandemic and the very chaotic way Igor Matovič cabinet was led. And the “best” thing was that the main villain (Marián Kočner) was acquitted twice by the court.

Fast forward ⏩⏩⏩

March 2019 — Zuzana Čaputová is elected as the first female president.
October 2020 — Coronavirus lockdown in Slovakia.
December 2020 — First person received a covid vaccine.
January 2021 — Joe Biden becomes President.
August 2021 — Kabul falls to the Taliban after 20 years of military presence.
February 2022 — Russia invades Ukraine.
October 2022 — Shooting in Tepláreň, Bratislava
March 2023 — OpenAI launches GPT-4, a large language model for ChatGPT.

Events listed above could give us a hint as to why Robert Fico’s party has the highest preference percentage of voters for upcoming elections. But after all the things he has been involved in?? Really? It was just 5 years ago since the murder of Ján and Martina, and we seem to forget quickly. We should remember our past otherwise we are doomed to repeat it.

30. September is the date for giving your vote in parliamentary elections. So, mark your calendars my friends, and remember that every vote matters.
